One of the most overlooked areas of the body that shows aging first it the neck. We spend so much time trying to prevent and reduce fine lines and wrinkles that gradually appear on our faces, but often neglect to do the same for our necks.

Revision Skincare's Research and Development Department has spent countless hours studying how the neck ages, how the skin on the face differs from the skin on the neck and what specific ingredients are needed to help prevent and reduce the signs of aging on the neck.

  As the muscles and skin become lax, horizontal line can appear which are referred to as rhytid lines (Fig.1) or “necklace lines”. Another cause of necklace lines is the gain of fat in the neck. The fat lies underneath the muscles in the neck. Over time, the skin becomes stressed by the fat pushing out the muscles. The muscles then fold over, forming lines.

  As we age, fat that used to be in the cheeks can cause jowls to form along the jaw line. Fat can also be deposited under the chin, causing the neck to become thicker and wider. (Fig. 4) Weight does not necessary determine whether you will gain fat in the neck area. Age, hormones and genetics play a part as well. If you are prone to gaining fat in other areas of the body, you may also gain fat in the neck. As you age, you lose fat in the face, but gain fat in the neck.
